Detective Genre in 21st Century

The main goal of writing a rhetorical analysis is to observe and analyze the adaptation of the detective genre in the 21st century. We watched the movie Sherlock Holmes directed by Guy Ritchie, the TV series Sherlock run by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, and Elementary run by Rob Doherty in last few weeks. We watched these productions not for the entertainment purpose, but observing how the plot, characters, and detective genre adapted in modern days.

Among these three movies, Sherlock is my favorite because it not only preserves many characteristics of the original convention but also adds some elements that are from the 21st century; such as, smart phones and professional technical lab for his research. In Elementary, the show changed Dr. Watson to a female, which is the most unacceptable plot in my opinion. Also, Dr. Joan Watson later has intimate relationship with Mycroft Holmes. Although the show reflects the social norm and morality standard in the 21st century, I view this plot as an disappointment of the original qualities of the character in Doyle's novella.

In my Rhetorical Analysis essay, I analyze the adaption of Dr. Watson. Hope you will enjoy it!
